Handbook Series
IQd is developing a series of resource materials aimed at providing international, national and local actors the tools to prevent violence by managing the issues underlying inter-group tensions. This easy-to-use Conflict Prevention Handbook Series, developed by IQd and published by the Folke Bernadotte Academy, provides actors with the concrete and immediate guidance they need to address selected issue areas among the common grievances of parties in conflict situations. The handbooks present, analyse and evaluate options available to address recurring issues, and indicate a process to guide the selection and elaboration of effective measures for de-escalating or preventing violence.
Handbooks presenting options and techniques of quiet diplomacy, and approaches to structuring dialogue and mediation processes provide a framework for action and a definitional and procedural foundation for the other handbooks in the series. Substantive topics addressed include: the management of diversity; land, natural resources and conflict; and participation in economic and public life. Currently, four handbooks have been completed: Options and Techniques for Quiet Diplomacy; Discrimination and Conflict Prevention; Managing Diversity: Language and Religion; and Power sharing, Self-governance and Participation in Public Life. Separate ‘Quick Guides’ distil essential information, procedural guidance and key messages from each handbook, providing an accessible and concise initial reference.
